Two more former employees of Zachry Industrial, one of San Antonio’s largest employers, charged with swindling the company have pleaded guilty.
John Tidwell, 54, a project manager who worked for the company for 34 years, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud before Chief U.S. District Judge Fred Biery.
Last week Biery, also took the plea of Otis Johnson, 42, of LaPorte, who pleaded guilty to a seperate conspiracy to commit mail fraud count, records show.
Tidwell, of Hobe Park, Fla., admitted he wrongly diverted more than $100,000 from scrap metal sales that should have gone to Zachry to two principals of Mill & Safety Supply Co. near Houston.
Those principals, President David J. Reitman and co-owner Gary Schwing, in turn gave Tidwell kickbacks, court records said.
As part of is plea deal, Tidwell could be sentenced to about a year in jail. He also agreed to pay restitution, and said he might have 75 percent of the amount by the time Biery sentences him on May 27.
Johnson, who had worked for Zachry Industrial for five years, most recently as a materials manager, admitted being one of four then-managers who inflated invoices so the company would pay Reitman and Schwing for items that never were delivered. The others have also pleaded guilty for their roles and face probation or up to three years in prison.
The indictment alleges Reitman and Schwing got almost $11 million from the schemes between 2003 and 2010 and gave the former Zachry workers unspecified percentages of the money as kickbacks.
Johnson’s plea deal is sealed, and full details of his role were unavailable Thursday.
